What to Expect from Your Dysphagia Course

This course will review the available evidence in a number of areas of dysphagia assessment including risk factors for aspiration and aspiration pneumonia, the use of instrumental assessment, and identification of several characteristics of normal swallowing that are often misdiagnosed as dysphagia. This course will also include a discussion of the evidence as it pertains to interventions to assist clinicians in decision making regarding exercise and electrical stimulation, oral hygiene, compensations and sensory interventions. Recommendations regarding diet, therapeutic techniques, or non-oral feeding can have implications well beyond the swallow system which will be clearly outlined. This course will also assist the clinician in reviewing all of the available evidence, including patient specific factors, in order to develop safe and effective management plans for their patients.
  1. Discuss the pros and cons of not recommending an instrumental assessment for the patient with dysphagia
  2. Identify risks and benefits of the use of free water with dysphagia patients
  3. Recognize appropriate and non-appropriate candidates for oral and/or pharyngeal exercise and NMES.
  4. Describe the benefits of completing a cranial nerve assessment
  5. Describe several effective evidence based assessment and treatment approaches for dysphagia

About Your Presenter

Tiffani Wallace has been treating patients with dysphagia for over 15 years. She currently holds her Board Certification in Swallowing and Swallowing Disorders (BCS-S). Tiffani has worked in various facilities, including schools, SNF’s, outpatient and acute care and completes Modified Barium Swallow Studies. Tiffani has recently earned her eleventh ACE award. She is also an associate member of the Dysphagia Research Society.

Tiffani is the founder and author of Dysphagia Ramlings and she currently has multiple webinars available through SpeechPathology.com and Northern Speech Services. Tiffani created and is the administrator of the Dysphagia Therapy Group and Dysphagia Therapy Group-Professional Edition on Facebook, offering a place for professionals, students and patients/families to share ideas and experiences. Tiffani currently serves on the Advisory Board for Smarty Ears Inc. and is a co-author of the apps Dysphagia2Go and Dysphagia Therapy. She is also the author of the app iScreen Aphasia.
