Online eLearning Accent Reduction Class Designed for All Languages

It’s frustrating being fluent in English yet still struggling with English pronunciation. Surveys reveal that individuals are comfortable asking someone to repeat themselves twice. If your message was not understood, it is unlikely to be asked a third time. When speech is unclear, it can be more challenging advancing professionally or even enjoying social situations.

Why is Speech Accented?

In general, many accented speakers tend to speak in a monotone, flat style that is too fast and does not have any or minimal pitch changes or vocal variety. Often the sound segments are too short, further creating speech that is choppy, fast and hard to process and understand. Other accented behaviors tend to bring too much emphasis on vowel sounds creating large glides and slides that are outside of the American rules.

You can reduce your accent! With our accent reduction class, you will learn how to speak English fluently, clearly, and with more confidence. Leading meetings, delivering presentations and daily communication will be more enjoyable when you know you are always being understood. There is noticeable improvement in about three weeks.

If you want to reduce your accent quickly, the number one and most important skill is to speak with American intonation, the culturally correct melody and rule pattern for English. Most people speak English from the melody pattern or rules from their first language causing their speech to sound too fast, monotone, choppy, and outside of the American cultural style.

In this course, you will learn an easy strategy called the Speech Stairs Strategy that will give you the framework to speak English clearly with American rules. The habits from your first language will be minimized or eliminated. You will notice improvement with clarity and confidence in about three weeks.

By the end of this course, the following objectives will be achieved:

    • Speak English clearly using the Speech Stairs Strategy, the American rule for melody patterns
    • Speak English with cultural correctness at the conversational level
    • Eliminate the habits that cause unclear English such as sounding monotone, or speaking too fast, forceful or choppy
    • Implement three real-world strategies for practicing skills at work and in the community

Enjoy speaking clearly while being viewed as a leader as you express your points with advanced American intonation and practical conversational exercises. Learn how to identify and eliminate ineffective behaviors that can compromise credibility for effective leadership when it comes to communication. Weak vocabulary, use of filler words (a poor American habit), and other behaviors that can minimize authority will be revealed. By the end of this course, you will be speaking clearly with new skills on how to improve your communication to enhance your leadership image.

By the end of this course, the following objectives will be achieved:

    • Speak English clearly for complex conversation such as leading meetings or delivering a presentation
    • Identify the three types of up-speak behavior and utilize strategies to eliminate it (This habit may be cultural but it really diminishes leadership persona)
    • Replace minimizing vocabulary with more relevant terminology
    • Apply strategic pauses to be a more powerful speaker
    • Pose questions to sound more like an authority with your subject
    • Apply the “cure” to stop “verbal viruses” from discrediting your message. A bad American speech habit of using filler words such as (um, uh, like, so, etc.)

Often due to culture, the voice can sound too high or thin in pitch, or have too much nasal resonance. This course will teach you how to place your voice to speak with tones that are strong, powerful, and can project from your best vocal pitch range. American resonance is taught so it is fully understood how to place speech in the mouth and other resonating cavities. Tones that sound too soft, weak, or nasal do not sound as confident as those with more powerful voices in American business culture. Communication will sound more professional, confident, and culturally correct with American resonance when vocal tones are strong and your speech is clear due to successfully reducing your accent.

By the end of this course, the following objectives will be achieved:

    • Speak from a stronger and more powerful voice
    • Access the power spot in your voice with several approaches
    • Eliminate a voice that sounds week, too high in pitch, or has too much nasal resonance
    • Understand the three types of American resonance and where to place your speech sound waves
    • Communicate with American oral resonance to have more culturally correct and polished English

Often accented speakers who come from a language where the speech is mostly monotone or too fast, speak from a shallow breath. This can lead to not having enough breath to finish a thought. Learning how to speak from a diaphragm breath will give you enough air to finish your thoughts and a strategy for managing speech that is too fast. Communicating your valuable points will be more fluid and comfortable from full breaths. In addition, your voice will have better natural projection.

    • Coordinate diaphragm breathing and talking for better clarity and more comfort
    • Eliminate short and shallow chest breathing
    • Utilize diaphragm breathing as a strategy for managing speech anxiety
    • Increase vocal power with improved projection

Learn the missing sounds from your English. Although it may seem that your accent has a lot of mistakes, having a foreign accent has more to do with incorrect use of American intonation as opposed to missing sounds. Typical accented speakers only need to learn a few sounds such as /th/ since it does not exist in most languages. Sounds that involve lip and jaw movement such as /f, v, w, r, p, b/ are often mispronounced since many cultures do not move their lip or jaw enough for what is required for American English. Regardless of which sounds need support, all American consonants have full instruction in this course.

By the end of this course, the following objectives will be achieved:

    • Learn how to correctly pronounce all American consonant sounds
    • Understand the mistakes made when learning new sounds and how to correct them
    • Identify unique nuances of American English that will further improve clarity
    • Apply strategies for pronouncing sounds correctly for higher demand communication such as delivering a presentation or leading a meeting
