Once someone learns a second language like English, it is spoken in the style of the first language because that is what talking is to the individual. As a result, speech is not spoken in the American cultural style and therefore is the biggest feature behind an accent.

What is learned first in an accent reduction class?

American Intonation. Intonation is the rhythm and melody patterns, as well as a cadence in a country’s language. The first step in our accent reduction classes is to have you speak your English in the American cultural and intonation style and not the pattern from your first language. After speaking English in the American cultural style there will be an immediate improvement in clarity.

Will I lose my accent completely?

No. Anyone who tells you that is not being truthful. There are many nuances across languages that make this not possible for a full loss of accent in spontaneous speech. You can expect to speak your English with more American cultural correctness, better clarity, and higher confidence. On a personal note, I think there are some advantages of having an accent such as being more unique and interesting as long as it sounds clear, and the communication is effective.
